HOLY SPIRIT; THE BEST GPS

Growing up with my two older siblings made me get away with many things. I didn’t learn to take responsibility because my older siblings were always present, and automatically they were the ones given responsibilities. I just had to do what they said. Over time, I got so used to it; well, until our life paths took us to different places – school, service (NYSC), and work.

I remember going to a new place and having to use the public transport system for the first time. I had to concentrate intently on the road and the directive given to me to ensure I did not miss a stop, get lost or delay my journey. Since I didn’t have my sisters around, I learnt to be very alert and attentive to the road, to every announcement or change in plans, to ensure I arrived at my destination safely and in time.

One time when my sister was home, I travelled with her. Having her there with me meant she had to stress about the directions, so I was calm throughout the journey. I took a book to read and had my headset on. I paid full attention to what I was reading and didn’t bother that I was on the bus and I would need to get down at a particular point.

When she said, “Heyyy, we’re here”, I jerked back to reality. When we arrived at our destination safely and in time. I realized how pleasant it was again to go on a journey without any stress. Compared to the previous journeys I had been making on my own, this was a pleasurable one. Queen, my sister, was responsible for the ‘how’ in the navigation; I just had to listen to her voice on the ‘when’.

The Believer’s Navigator

Dear believer, this is a relatable scenario of the Holy Spirit’s presence in our lives. He’s there to focus on the ‘how’ we get to destinations in life while we simply listen to His leading. When we insist on discovering the ‘how’, we become too distracted to listen to His voice.

Girl looking for directions

The journey with my sister reminded me of the clarity, precision and ease that should come with walking in The Spirit. Following and walking by the Spirit’s leading is saying, “I know who know road”. As believers, it is high time we stop taking the pressure and responsibility for the Holy Spirit. We deny the Holy Spirit’s function when we insist on doing (with greater difficulty, work and labour) what He will do with ease.

As humans, we like to control and predict outcomes, but the faith walk teaches us that control and predictions are only myths to the natural man who doesn’t know what the next minute holds. The world convinces us against quiet listening but applauds us in situations of loud control that we don’t have.

Same as the journey with my sister. There was someone given the control I desired to have, and all I had to do was listen out for this person’s voice (Holy Spirit). If we’re not too busy figuring it out on our own, we’ll hear when He says “we’re here” or “get off at this stop” or “take this bus” because He’s the best GPS of all time. The reality of God right inside of us must be evidenced by the navigation of our lives, and it is majorly manifested through the Holy Spirit; by listening quietly to His leading and not noisy thoughts and actions.

Who Is The HOLY SPIRIT?

To you who’s asking, ‘Who’s this Holy Spirit?’ Let me explain; The Holy Spirit is a beautiful and powerful part of who God is. Jesus himself identifies the Spirit as a coequal member of the Trinity. When we track this Holy member of the Trinity through the pages of the Bible, we see that He has all the attributes of personhood: mind, will, and emotion. So one of the first things we should know about the Holy Spirit is that the Holy Spirit is not an “it.”

The Holy Spirit is a PERSON. This is who the Holy Spirit primarily is to us as believers – God with us, helping and empowering us to live a flourishing life that radiates the goodness of God. He’s the Spirit who steps in and helps us be who God created us to be. When we feel powerless or tired, we can always have confidence that we’re not alone as ABBA’s children. We start each day knowing the Holy Spirit is there to help us. He is the power that sustains, energizes, and keeps us on the holy path.

The Holy Spirit was given to live inside those who believe in Jesus to produce God’s character in that believer’s life. Rather than trying to be godly, God asks us to rely on Him to produce these qualities – love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control – in our lives (Gal. 5:22-23). Thus Christians are told to walk in the Spirit and be filled with the Spirit.

In addition, the Holy Spirit empowers Christians to perform ministerial duties that promote spiritual growth among Christians. The Holy Spirit also performs a function for non-Christians. He convicts people’s hearts of God’s truth – concerning how sinful we are, needing God’s forgiveness; how righteous Jesus is, how He died in our place for our sins, and about God’s eventual judgment on the world and those who do not know Him. The Holy Spirit tugs on the hearts and minds of unbelievers, asking them to repent and turn to God for forgiveness and a new life.

Here is the charge:

  • Desire a relationship with the Holy Spirit today as He also desires a relationship with you.
  • Do not be too quick to make decisions over issues in your life, but wait on Him for directions concerning your life.
  • If you have not submitted your life to Him, you should do that today and not delay.
